Lockers MUST be cleared out by Thursday, June 10th, ALL projects and personal belongs must be removed from the studio by that date as well.

Syllabus & Calendar

 

Requirements for this course are the completion of five specific, assigned projects, each project worth one credit.  In addition there will be basic exercise-in-technique assignments designed to develop dexterity in the handling of clay, specifically handbuilding methods including:  pinch, coil, and slab and surface treatments including: underglaze, slip, glaze, and overglaze.  Participation in clay mixing is also required.  Throwing on the wheel is optional and NOT required except for those students enrolled in Art 261.  There will be two written exams as noted below.  For Spring Quarter there will be 1 to 2 Raku firings (weather permitting), optional for 260, required for 261.

 

Week 1:

Introduction; discussion and slide presentation on first project; handbuilding technique; pinch.

Surface treatment: underglazes.  Lab: basic wheel throwing, centering demo for beginning throwers.

 

Week 2:

Handbuilding techniques:  coil and slab; basic wheel throwing techniques; centering, the cylinder, shaping and footing/trimming. Surface treatment: lowfire glazes.

 

Week 3:

Sketches due for first project by Tues., 4/13; discussion and slide presentation on second project; low fire glazes discussed as surface technique; ‘Pulled’ handles and ‘sprigging-on’ techniques covered.  Lab demo: throwing bowls Extruder demo. Surface treatment: cone 10 high fire reduction glazes.

 

Week 4:

Discussion and slide presentation on third project; sketches due for 2nd project by 4/22; surface techniques utilizing slips/engobes will be discussed and demonstrated. Lab demo: wheel throwing - plates and platters.  No lab on Friday. Project #1 must be ready for bisque firing this week..

 

Week 5:

Discussion and slide presentation on Etruscan ceramics; sketches due for 3rd project, Thurs., 4/29 discussion of project #4;  Lab demo:  wheel throwing techniques:  sectional forms; midterm and group critique of first project.  Loading cone 10 gas kiln, Monday, April 26 & Thurs. April 29.

 

Week 6:

Sketches due for 4th project; Thursday, May 6, additional wheel throwing techniques; sectional forms; surface techniques utilizing overglazes with examples.  Project #2 must be ready for bisque firing this week. Unload gas kiln on Monday, May 3.

 

Week 7:

Sketches due for FINAL project by May 13; discussion and slide presentation:  Robert Arneson.  Wheel-throwing:  lidded pieces covered.  Project #3 should be completed by the end of this week.  Load gas kiln Monday, May 10 and Thursday, May 13.

 

Week 8:

Discussion and slide presentation on Pre-Columbian ceramics.  Group critique on project #2. Load gas kiln on Monday, May 17.  Project #4 should be completed by the end of the week.

 

Week 9:

Last week for working with WET clay/greenware.  No wet clay work after Friday, May 28.  No exceptions.  Holiday on Monday, May 31, NO LAB.

 

Week 10:

ALL projects must be dry and ready for BISQUE firing by Tuesday, June 1 – Last bisque loads.  Final written exam, Thursday, June 3rd.  Load gas kiln for final cone 10 firing on Thursday, June 5th . Final week for lowfire glaze firings.

 

Week 11:

Unload gas kiln on Monday, June 7.   Last date for lowfire glaze and overglaze firings.  Group critique on Thursday, June 10 with all projects/work due!  Mandatory attendance!  NO EXCEPTIONS!  Mandatory cleanup, Monday, June 7.
