8 1/2” x 11” college rule paper

3 or 4 Blue Books from the student book store

 

 

Course Description

 

This is an integrated skills class that focuses on developing your academic reading and writing skills.  You will write several essays throughout the quarter, some in-class and some outside of class.  You will learn about the writing process from start to finish and practice other types of writing such as free writing, response writing and summaries.  You will learn to use self and peer editing skills to improve your writing.  You will also work on your academic reading skills to help you become a stronger reader and a more critical thinker.  You will refine your understanding and use of English grammar and sentence construction as well.  In short, this class will help you acquire the academic skills needed to succeed in credit classes.

 

 

Course Outcomes

 

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

·         Writing Skills:

o        Write effective introductions and conclusions.

o        Write clear thesis statements and topic sentences.

o        Develop and organize ideas.

o        Use examples and details for support.

o        Compose with unity and coherence (within and between paragraphs)

o        Edit and proofread.

o        Recognize and use correct structure.

o        Recognize and use correct grammar and mechanics.

o        Develop sentence variety.

·         Reading Skills

o        Increase speed and comprehension of reading materials.

o        Identify main ideas.

o        Improve comprehension of vocabulary in context.

o        Respond critically to readings.

o        Acquire academic vocabulary.

o        Analyze and synthesize information.

 

 

 

Grading

To pass this class, you must receive at least a 75% final grade and pass the final exam.  Grades will be based on the following:

 

            Participation, Attitude and Effort                               10%

           

            Take Home Essays/Homework                                    20%

 

            Reading and Grammar Quizzes                                   30%

           

            Essay Tests                                                                 40%

 

 

Grading Scale:             A = 93 – 100

                                                B = 84 – 92

                                                C = 75 - 83

D = 0 – 74 (Good Effort)

F = 0 – 74 (Poor Effort)

 

Classroom Guidelines

 

All out-of-class essays, response writings, and summaries must be typed and in the following format:  double-spaced; size 12 font; 1 inch margins; centered title; full name, date, and assignment name in the upper right hand corner.

 

Assignments lose 10% of their value per day late.  No homework will be accepted more than two days after the due date.  All assignments are due AT THE BEGINNING of the class period.  All assignments must be in hard copy form.  Print before coming to class!  Always back up your work.

 

Keep all assignments and written work well-organized in a three-ring binder.  Keep track of your progress in each area of class.

 

DO YOUR OWN WORK!  If I believe you have not written your assignment on your own, I will ask you to do it again.  Do not have others do your editing for you.  Any plagiarized work will be returned ungraded.

 

If you are unclear about an assignment, please ask me!  If I don’t hear from you, I will assume that you understand the material.  If you need extra help, talk to me about coming to see me during my office hours so I can help you.

 

Students reaching 12 absences will receive and “F” and may become out–of-status.  Students with 10 or 11 absences will receive a “D” and have to repeat the level.  Three tardies (5 minutes late to class or after break) equals one absence.  Absences and tardies will be subtracted from your participation grade.

 

Make-up tests are not given unless you have a note from the doctor or serious extenuating circumstances that prevented you from being present in class.  Please talk to me in advance if you know you are going to miss class for any reason.

 

Students who do not take the final exam will have their grade lowered by one full grade.

 

Contact the instructor through phone or email when absent of if you have a question about an assignment.

 

Come to class on time every day and participate fully.

 

Bring your books with you every day unless told not to.

 

Read teacher feedback carefully and respond appropriately.

 

Recommendations will be happily given to students receiving an A or B grade in this class.  A three-day notice is needed!

 

No cell phones, beepers, headphones, eating or gum chewing in class, please!  When you enter the classroom, it is time to prepare your mind for learning.  There should be no distractions from the learning environment!  Thank you.
