                   English-English Dictionary

                   Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens (Penguin Reader)

 

Course Description:

The purpose of this class is to help you to improve your reading ability in English.  You will explore various subjects by reading news articles, a short novel and other stories, and by the daily use of our textbooks.  You will work to actively develop vocabulary as well as the skills needed to guess vocabulary in context.  Group and class discussions will give you the opportunity to express your opinion about the readings.

 

Course Outcomes:

At the end of this class, students will be able to:

  • Understand vocabulary in context
  • Locate main ideas
  • Skim and scan for main ideas
  • Express opinions about a reading passage
  • Write responses to a passage in a set time period
  • Identify the author’s point of view
  • Summarize main points in a passage

 

Grading:

In order to pass this class, you must have a class average of 75% or above and pass the final exam.

Participation          10%

Attendance            15%            

          Assignments:

 in- class/hw          25%

          Grading Scale:           A= 93-100

                                          B= 84-92

                                          C= 75-83

    D= 0-74 repeat                                                               F= 0-74 repeat

 

Assignments lose 10% of their value per day late. No homework will be accepted more than two days after the due date.  All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period.

 

Please note: Recommendations for students for credit classes will be written only for those receiving a final grade of “B” or above.  A 3-day notice is requested.

 

Attendance:

1.       Students are expected to come to class every day.

2.     Students with 12 or more absences can not pass this class.

3.     Late arrival times accumulate toward absences.
