The focus of this course is for you to get an unpaid observational internship of at least 220 hours that you will complete during summer quarter. Class time will be spent improving necessary skills, hearing reminders and updates, clarifying your questions about the internship search, and reviewing and expanding on topics related to the internship search. You will be meeting with your internship advisor for personal assistance in refining your search and quality checking your documents during approximately four 20-minute appointments. You must find your internship. Your advisor does not place you into an internship. You are required to find an internship and complete the internship documentation by the last day of the quarter, June 8th. Documents can be downloaded from your MyBC Observation Placement course site.
Appointments & Internship Information
Attendance & Lateness – IBP Program Policy
Daily attendance is expected. 3 tardies of 5 minutes or more (per hour) = 1 absence
Missing 10 minutes or more of any hour of class = 1 absence. If you are absent more than 10 percent of the total hours (more than one class), you will receive a warning letter. If you are absent more than 15 percent of the total hours, you may be dismissed from the program. If you cannot attend class, you should contact your instructor before the class, either by telephone or email. Simply say “I cannot attend class today because I am sick/missed the bus/etc.” This is good practice for your internship: you cannot just skip the class/work without informing the boss before. Learning to get to class/work on time is an important skill for your internship!
If you are not in class, you are not participating (F). If you sit in the class and speak only when the teacher calls on you, you are not participating well (D). If you sometimes volunteer an answer or ask a question, you are doing the minimum participation (C). If you often volunteer an answer or ask a question, you are participating well (B). If you volunteer an answer or ask a question every day, you are participating very well (A).
Special Needs & Academic Honesty
Plagiarism and Cheating:
Students are in IBP classes to learn English and IBP teachers are here to help them. Cheating makes that harder for both the students and the teachers. There are different kinds of cheating: plagiarism, “borrowing” a classmate’s homework (partially or wholly), using an essay or a presentation from a previous quarter, using “cheat notes”, and copying answers from classmates’ papers during tests.
Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas as your own in both writing and oral presentations. It is cheating and is not acceptable in American classes.
Examples of plagiarism are:
o Copying from a Web page, book or article
o Buying papers
o Copying from another student
o Using a friend’s paper from a previous quarter
If you plagiarize:
o First time: your teacher will work with you so that you understand what not to do
o Second time: Fail the assignment
o Third time: Fail the class and be reported to the Associate
Dean of Student Services. Possibly be asked to leave the school
Special Needs:
If you require accommodation based on a documented disability, have emergency medical information to share, or need special arrangements in case of emergency evacuation, please make an appointment with DRC (Disability Resource Center.) If you would like to inquire about becoming a DRC student, you may call 564-2498 or go in person to the DRC program office in B132.
Other:
Please refer to the Arts and Humanities Student Procedures and Expectations www.bellevuecollege.edu/artshum/studentinfo.asp for all other information.
