COURSE OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

Reading Skills

  • Read a minimum of 50 pages weekly
  • Read to confirm or revise predictions
  • Draw conclusions and make inferences
  • Identify the author’s point of view in a reading
  • Understand new vocabulary through context

 

Discussion and Presentation Skills

  • Respond appropriately to questions about a reading
  • Express an opinion relevant to the content or ideas in a reading
  • Support views with reasons and/or evidence
  • Expand on the content or ideas expressed in a reading
  • Summarize a reading
  • Use new vocabulary appropriately
  • Present a clear, engaging summary, response, and discussion of a reading to the class

 

Critical Thinking Skills

  • Recognize biases and values and acknowledge the perspective of others
  • Use logic to question and analyze information
  • Synthesize material on a particular topic

 

Study Skills

  • Find specific materials in the library and on-line
  • Evaluate the quality of Internet resources for authority, objectivity, accuracy and currency
  • Cite sources using an MLA format

 

 

GRADING

Current Events/Issues Preparation and Presentation                        50 points

Homework                                                                                   10-25 points each

Tests (every other week including MT and final)                                            50 points each                     

Final Research Preparation and Presentation                                 100 points

Quizzes                                                                                       20 points weekly

Class participation                                                                        33% of total points

 

*Note:  Because much of this class is predicated on active participation, students will lose points for each absence and for repeated lateness to class. Students who miss 12 or more sessions will receive an “F” and those with 10 or 11 absences will receive a “D.”

B=83-92

C=73-82

D=63-72

EXPECTATIONS:  Students will:

  1. Be on time to class 
  2. Come to class regularly
  3. Be prepared to work with all necessary materials including the text, dictionaries, paper and pens
  4. Participate fully in activities and discussions!!!!
  5. Ask for clarification when needed
  6. Find out from the instructor or classmates what was missed when absent
  7. Behave appropriate to a college level classroom.
  8. Respect differing opinions
  9. Respect differences in learning and teaching styles
  10. Not use cell phones or beepers during class (Have them turned off!)
  11. Throw away their own litter
  12. Not eat during class
  13. Not plagiarize
  14. Keep an accurate record of your own progress/grades
  15. Read comments on papers.  Ask for clarification if necessary.  Respond appropriately.
  16. Speak English only.
  17. Keep dictionary references to a minimum except for dictionary activities
