Course Description
This class is designed to help you become a better writer. We will use and review the grammar and writing skills you already have, and build on these through daily writing practice. You will learn to use prewriting techniques such as brainstorming, outlining, and free writing. Your writing will grow from sentence level to organized paragraphs using good sentence structure and correct verb forms and tenses to describe, tell a story, and make a point.
Course Outcomes
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
· Recognize and use correct verb tense and forms.
· Identify parts of speech and explain their functions in simple English sentences.
· Recognize and use simple and compound sentences.
· Understand and use the writing process: getting ideas, writing, rewriting, editing, and proofreading.
· Write a coherent paragraph that includes a topic sentence, enough support, time signals, and a concluding sentence.
· Write paragraphs that narrate (tell a story), describe (using the 5 senses) and make a point.
· Write assignments that include free writing, academic writing, and timed topic writing.
· Work within a small group.

Classroom Guidelines
Come to class every day and participate actively. Students reaching 12 absences will be given an “F” and students reaching 10 or 11 absences will be given a” D.” or an F. If you miss 15 classes, you will receive an “F” and be dismissed from ELI at the end of the quarter. Three tardies (5 minutes or later to class or after break) equals one absence. Absences and tardies will be deducted from your participation grade.
If you are absent, you are responsible for your homework the next day. Call or email a classmate to find out what you missed. There will be no make-up quizzes or tests.
Students choosing to leave ELI early will not be given early final exams. If you miss the final exam for this class, your grade will be lowered by one full grade.
Late work will be accepted only one day after it is due, and will lose points. See me immediately after you have been absent to get caught up.
No cell phones, beepers, eating, or gum chewing in class! Please treat the learning environment and one another with respect.
Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas as your own in both writing and oral presentations. It is cheating and is not acceptable in American classes.
Examples of plagiarism are:
Copying from a Web page, book or article
Buying papers
Copying from another student
Using a friend’s paper from a previous quarter
If you plagiarize:
First time: Your teacher will work with you so you understand what not to do
Second time: Fail the assignment
Third time: Fail the class and be reported to the Associate Dean of Student Services. Possibly be asked to leave the school
Disability Accommodations
If you require accommodation based on a documented disability, have emergency information to share, or need special arrangements in case of emergency evacuation; please make an appointment with me as soon as possible.
