COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a chance for students to explore cultural and social issues while studying English.  Instruction and discussion will be based on excerpts from TV broadcasts as well as students’ interests.  This lively exchange of ideas is open to all non-native students of intermediate level and above.

COURSE STRUCTURE:

Each quarter we will work with excerpts from several types of television programs.  Working with a transcript of the broadcast, we will stress listening comprehension skills and vocabulary work.

During each segment, students will answer general questions about what they have heard and advance to more specific questions about what was said.  They will occasionally listen for complete sentences from the text, and finally see the written transcript which we will go over in detail.

Thursdays will be a chance for conversation and discussion based on students’ listening logs.  Every week students will listen to a program at home and fill out a worksheet. Each student will tell the others about their program.

Certificates will be presented at the end of the quarter to students who attend 75% of class sessions.
