COURSE OBJECTIVES

Reading is something that people do for many different reasons.  People read for information.  That’s why they read newspapers and magazines, for example.  People read for fun and entertainment.  That’s why comic books, novels, and short stories are popular.  Reading is sometimes hard work and sometimes it’s fun.  Generally, it is less work and more fun as your reading speed, skills, and vocabulary increases.  The focus of this class will be reading skill development and vocabulary growth through high interest readings.  I hope you will see gains in your reading ability, and I hope you have some fun as your ability grows.

 

COURSE OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

GRADES:

You must have a 75% or better on all coursework and  a 75% or better on the final exam.  During the last week of class, all Level 3 reading students will take the Final Reading 3 Exam.  You MUST receive a 75% or better on the final exam in order to move to Level 4.  You will need to repeat Level 3 if you miss this exam.  In addition, there will be numerous quizzes throughout the quarter and a midterm exam.  You are also expected to complete all homework assignments, class website discussion board questions, and have active participation* in class. 

 

*Participation includes regular attendance to class.  To obtain a high participation grade, you will need to come to class prepared to discuss homework, ask questions when you don’t understand something, volunteer answers and work actively with your classmates in pair and group work, and listening politely when others are speaking.

 

Grading Scale:

A = 93 -100                 D = below 75: Satisfactory effort- Need to Repeat Level 3

B = 84 – 92                 F = below 75: Unsatisfactory effort – Need to Repeat Level 3

C=  75 - 83                            

 

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  

*                  Attend class every day.  If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find             out what you have missed from a classmate.

*                  Students who miss class 10 or 11 times will receive a grade of “D.”

*                  Students who miss class 12 times will receive a grade of “F.”

*                  If you arrive after I have taken attendance, you will be marked late.  If you            are late 3 times, this will count as 1 absence.

 

 

CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS:

*                  Complete all the quizzes, exams, presentations.  There are NO make-up            quizzes, exams, or presentations in this class.

*                  Complete the homework assignments on time.  No late assignments will be       accepted for credit.

*                  Speak only English when you are in class.  Don’t worry about making       mistakes- that’s one of the best ways to learn English!  We are here to learn   together! 

*                  Be sure to keep academic honesty and integrity. Students who cheat on    exams and assigned work can be dismissed from the program.
