This course is designed to help you improve your speaking, listening, and note taking skills, so that you will be more successful in regular academic classes.

Course Goals

Specifically, in this course you will learn to:

      Speaking Skills

      • ask relevant questions based on lectures, presentations, and readings

      • start and take part in conversations and both formal and informal discussions

      • summarize orally

a pen or pencil for writing

• 8 ˝-by-11-inch white, lined paper

a notebook or folder to keep your work organized

• (optional) an English-English dictionary is often useful

Attendance

•     Come to class on time every day.  Late arrivals count (50 minutes = 1 absence).

•     If you’re absent 5 days, you will have to meet with an advisor.

If you’re absent 10 days, you may be expelled.

•     When you’re absent, it’s your job to find out what you missed.  The best way is to telephone a classmate, or you can ask me before or after class.

Classroom Behavior

I want the classroom to be a nice place to work, think, and speak.  Please respect the other students:  turn off your cell phone in class; don’t talk when someone else is talking, but if no one is talking, feel free to talk to your classmates.

Homework

Turn in your homework or give your presentation on the day it is due.  If you are absent that day, turn it in on your first day back.  If your homework is late, the grade may be lower.  If your presentation is late, you might receive a zero.

Grading                                               Mid     Final       Grading Scale

Your final grade will be calculated                                    93-100       A

Special Needs

If you require special help because of a documented disability, have emergency medical information to share, or need special arrangements in case of an emergency evacuation, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible.  If you would like information about getting documentation for a disability, please call 425-564-2498, or go in person to the DSS (Disability Support Services) office in B-132.

Conclusion

Finally, I hope that you will enjoy the class.  I think that if you read, think, talk, listen, ask questions, and share ideas, you will improve your English and have a good time.  Good luck.
