Course Description
This course is designed to help you improve your speaking,
listening, and note taking skills, so that you will be more successful in
regular academic classes.
Course Goals
Specifically, in this course you will learn to:
Speaking Skills
• ask relevant questions
based on lectures, presentations, and readings
• start and take part in
conversations and both formal and informal discussions
• summarize orally
Listening Skills
• show appropriate eye
contact and listening signals
• take notes from lectures
and/or taped TV programs or movies
• answer factual questions
based on your notes
• notice and understand
grammatical structures (-er, -est, conditional, time
order, cause, etc.)
• anticipate topics and
questions
• identify main ideas and
details
• notice and understand
gestures, emphasis, and tone to help you understand meaning
Textbook and Materials
• Contemporary Topics 2, 2nd edition, by
Ellen Kisslinger
• a pen or pencil for writing
• 8 ˝-by-11-inch white, lined paper
• a notebook or folder to keep your
work organized
• (optional) an English-English dictionary is often useful
Attendance
•
Come to class on time every day. Late arrivals count (50 minutes = 1
absence).
•
If you’re absent 5 days, you will have to meet with an advisor.
If you’re absent 10 days, you may be expelled.
•
When you’re absent, it’s your job to find out what you missed. The
best way is to telephone a classmate, or you can ask me before or after class.
Classroom Behavior
I want the classroom to be a nice place to work, think, and
speak. Please respect the other students: turn off your cell phone
in class; don’t talk when someone else is talking, but if no one is talking,
feel free to talk to your classmates.
Homework
Turn in your homework or give your presentation on the day
it is due. If you are absent that day, turn it in on your first day
back. If your homework is late, the grade may be lower. If your
presentation is late, you might receive a zero.

improve your English and have a good time. Good luck.
