Course Description:
This class will help you speak, listen, and take notes better so that you will be communicate and remember well. You’ll do this by working on such things as sounds, stress and intonation in words, phrases, and sentences; vocabulary; grammar; and communication strategies, and most of all, by speaking and listening a lot.
Materials:
• NorthStar Listening and Speaking, Basic/Low Intermediate, by Robin Mills and Laurie Frazier
• a 3-ring binder OR a notebook with pockets for organizing your papers
• a pen or pencil, and 8 1/2 x 11 – inch lined paper for your homework
• a dictionary
Course Goals: In this course, we’ll practice
Speaking
Ask about and/or expressing
- likes and preferences
- expectations
- opinions and beliefs
- past event in chronological order
Start and maintain
- casual conversations
- small and large group discussions
Presentations
Organize main points in an outline
Explain main points and difficult vocabulary
Summarize main points and form a conclusion
(optional) Use visual aids
Pronunciation
Show mastery of pronunciation practices
Use good rhythm, stress, and intonation
Listening
Taking simple notes from live speech or audio/videotapes
Recognize normal and emphatic stress
Use appropriate eye contact and listening signals
Summarize orally
Lateness & Absence:
Please come to class on time. If you are late for a total of 50 minutes, I will count it as one absence. If you are absent 5 days, you will receive a warning. If you are absent 10 days, you might fail the class.
Classroom Behavior:
I want the classroom to be a nice place to work, think, and speak. Please respect the other students: turn off your cell phone in class; don’t talk when someone else is talking, but if no one is talking, feel free to talk to your classmates.
Homework:
Please turn in your homework or give your presentation on the day it is due. If you are absent that day, please turn it in on your first day back. If your homework or presentation is late, the grade will be 10% lower each day.
Vacation Days:
There will be no class on May 29th.
Grading: In order to pass this class, you must receive an overall grade of 75 percent or higher. I will add up your scores in these areas:
Midterm Final
Short Presentations/Projects 30% 30%
Quizzes and Exams 40% 35%
Attendance/Participation 10% 10%
Comprehensibility
(loudness, accent, grammar) 10% 10%
Homework 10% 5%
Final Project --- 10%
Grading Scale:
93-100 A
84-92 B
75-83 C
0-74 D (good effort)
0-74 F (unsatisfactory effort)
Finally, I hope that you will enjoy the class. I think that if you speak, listen, think, talk, ask questions, and share ideas, you will learn a lot and have a good time.
