Long vowel sound = LVS    Short vowel sound = SVS

If you add an ending to a word that begins with a vowel AND the final syllable has a SVS, double the final consonant (VCCV)

plan – planned                       stop – stopped

Another general rule:  The following consonants are generally doubled after a short vowel sound at the end of a one-syllable word:  f, l, s (except after u), z

Examples:  cuff, staff, off, cliff - exception: if

dress, pass, miss, loss – exception: gas, this, yes

buzz, fizz – exception:  quiz, topaz
