ATTENDANCE

The only excused reasons for missing class are personal or family illness or a death in the family. Please call me and leave a message if you cannot come to class. Vacations, job problems, and other classes, long illnesses or taking care of family members for a long time are unexcused and are not reasons for missing class. You will not be allowed to enroll next quarter if you:

·         miss 20% (4 days) of class sessions this quarter;

·         do not make progress;

·         miss the pre or post test or other required assessments. These pre and post tests are very important. You cannot be a student in this program unless you take all of the pre and post tests.

GRADING SCALE

I will write comments on the assignments and homework you hand in mark assignments and homework, as well as test and quizzes, with the following grades:

STANDARDS FOR CONTINUED ENROLLMENT IN ESL CLASSES

Students attending ESL classes at Bellevue Community College are expected to make significant and sustained academic progress for their program and level. If academic progress, as defined in program policy, is not met, students may not continue in the program. Academic progress is determined by the teacher based on classroom work, tests (including CASAS pre and post tests), demonstration of competence on performance tasks, and attendance. Students will be informed near the end of the current quarter that they need to improve their performance or they may not be offered enrollment in future classes. Students with verified and documented educational disabilities must demonstrate the same progress as other students with reasonable accommodations, such as additional time. It is the responsibility of the student requesting reasonable accommodation to provide verification of disability and to disclose this information to the program and to the office of Disability Support Services.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

Bellevue Community College’s “Affirmation of Inclusion” is posted in each classroom and states that we will all treat one another, students, faculty, staff members and administrators, with respect and dignity even if we don’t agree philosophically. This supports the idea of free speech in a free society—we have the right to express unpopular ideas as long as we don’t show disrespect for people who might not believe the same as we do. Appropriate student behavior is expected as outlined in the Arts and Humanities student expectations guidelines.
