Mailing Books to Distance Education Students

In order to support library needs of students taking online classes, the LMC will mail books to students currently enrolled in these classes. This service will enable students to utilize the Library Media Center's book collection in their studies and research.

    LMC will mail books to:
    • Students who are currently enrolled in online classes
    • Must reside in the continental United States-not including Alaska and Hawaii
    Lending
    • LMC will only mail books from the circulating collection.
    • Books will be lent for the LMC loaning standard of three weeks, with one renewal of three weeks.
    • Students may have a maximum of five books checked out at any given time.
    • The student is responsible for all books that she/he borrows from the LMC.
    • Fines, damage, and lost replacement fees will be assessed as needed according to the current LMC policies.
Filling a Student Request for Books
    • Student will contact the LMC via email at circulation@bellevuecollege.edu to place a request.
    • Student will provide his/her student ID number, mailing address, and the books needed with complete bibliographic information (title, author, edition or publication date, call number).
    • LMC will verify that the student is enrolled in the online class.
    • LMC will retrieve the requested books and email the student regarding their availability.
    • LMC will checkout and mail the requested books to the student. Note: the due date will be extended by 4 days in order to account for mailing time.
    • LMC will place a note identifying the books that are being mailed. This will be done in Voyager Circulation, within the General Note section.
    Mailing Procedures
    • Books will be placed in an envelope/box and prepared to be mailed to the student.
    • LMC will enclose a brief policy letter, list of books that are charged to student, and return label in the mailing package.
    • Books will be mailed at library rate. BC will pay for the outgoing postage but the student will pay the return postage.
It is the student's responsibility to make sure that the books are returned to the LMC at the due date, or overdue fines apply.

    Community Borrowers

The BC Library Media Center (LMC) facilities and resources are available for use by library users who are not students or employees of BC. There have been cases when these users have requested to borrow books and magazines to use outside the LMC. Several community and technical colleges in Washington State have a community borrower policy.

    • A user card valid from the day of issue through the remaining academic year and subject to Circulation Policies will be issued to King County residents for a $20.00 fee. This fee will include a user card. Fees collected will be deposited in the LMC revenue fund.
    • All user cards expire on the day after the last day of spring quarter, which is the last day of the academic year. New cards for the year are issued starting the first day of summer quarter. New cards will only be issued after all outstanding items are returned and fines and fees have been paid.
    • Community borrowing card and picture ID will be required at every check out. Lost and damaged cards may be replaced for a $2.00 processing fee.
    • There will be a check out limit of 2 items only per borrower.
      • Books may be checked out for 3 weeks
      • Periodicals may be checked out for 1 week
      • Course Reserve items may be used in the library only
      • Audio-visual materials may be used in the Media Services lab only
    • There will be no check out during breaks between quarters, when the LMC is officially closed.
    • Card holders are responsible for all items checked out to their account. Fines will be charged for overdue items (currently $0.20 per open day, per item). Borrower will be charged a replacement cost for lost or missing materials.

    Disabled Student Access

The LMC complies with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and provides assistance and resources to individuals in wheelchairs and those who are hearing and/or sight impaired.

    Resources

    Closed-Captioning Box
Available in the Media Center by request. This equipment decodes pre-formatted video tapes to display text dialogue on the screen. Also available for classroom use.

    ADA Accessible PC Workstations
The LMC has several specific stations designated specifically for use by students in wheelchairs or with other documented disabilities. All library catalogs, electronic databases, and web browsing functionalities are available at these stations.

    Large Print Reader
Available in the Media Center for sight impaired students. The large print reader is also wheelchair accessible.

    Personal Assistance
Sight impaired students needing assistance may inquire at any service counter or at the Reference Desk.

    Interlibrary Loan

The LMC has cooperative relationships with several libraries throughout the Northwest. If an item is not available in the BC Collection, a reference librarian can help locate a library that owns the item. In most instances, it is possible to borrow the material from the other library through a system called Interlibrary Loan. It usually takes 7-10 days to get an item via interlibrary loan, but can take as long as two weeks. The library will also consider purchasing individual articles directly from publishers if the article is otherwise unavailable. There are limits to the number of items that can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan. Requests must be placed with a reference librarian: (425) 564-6161

    Copy Machines

There are two coin-operated photocopiers in the Library Media Center. These machines accept coins and $1 and $5 bills. Copies cost 10 cents a page. Double-sided copies and 11 x 17 copies are 20 cents each.

    Microfiche and Film Reader Printers

There is a microform reader located in the Library Media Center. Back issues of many periodicals that the library subscribes to are available in microfilm or microfiche. The LMC has microform versions of the New York Times from Sept 1851-2005, Newsweek from 1949-2001 and Time Magazine from 1958-2001. Microforms may be read for free but hard copies are 10¢ per page.
